Meditation, A to Z Again

Meditation A to Z

Out of numerous spiritual practices namely celibacy, renunciation etc., meditation due to its simplicity and health related benefits, has always been a topic of discussion even among non-spiritualists. Let’s dive into the depths of it with a rational approach for its significance and its benefits.

Meditation as generally explained in dictionaries means brooding and deep thinking. But meditation is completely different from it. Instead of continuous thinking of a certain subject, meditation comprises of observing the subject only. Meditation is a continued state of concentration of mental rays on a particular subject. So, for proper meditation one must develop enough and prolonged concentration. But this doesn’t mean that those who do not have good concentration cannot attempt meditation. They too can meditate by continued practice. Their primary effort for meditation helps them to develop good concentration which acts as the foundation for meditation.

Meditation helps us to expand our awareness and calm our mind. Health related benefits of meditation are no miracle today. It is said that stress is the main cause of all ailments and meditation is no doubt the best stress buster available with us. Meditation not only helps one to develop physically and mentally but also helps one to grow emotionally and ethically. Along with stress reduction, which enables you to put most of you in your work, it also develops a sense of inner satisfaction in you which frees you from greed, lust and anger. Apart from this meditation is having is considered the king of all spiritual practices because it help you to grow spiritually. It is the only means to allow your real being, your soul to manifest itself as the master of your body and mind.

There are many techniques of meditation and people mostly are found confused with the technique of meditation they should follow. Actually, just like religions, which have the same ground of existence, all meditation techniques are also constructed on a common principle foundation. So, it doesn’t matter which approved meditation technique you follow, all of them lead to same experiences and effects.

If you are yet wondering, here is the world’s simplest and most effective method for you to follow. Choose a calm and solitary place. Sit in any posture with which you are comfortable for longer periods. Hold you trunk and backbone straight as if your head is suspended by some wire tied on the top of your skull. Allow your hands to rest in your lap or on your knees. Close your eyes gently. Take a few slow deep breaths and relax your body completely. Try to observe the movement of your breath. Gently bring your attention back on the breath if your mind runs into some other thought. Continue with this as long as you can. Then slowly move your attention to different parts of your body and try to feel through them. Open your eyes gently and leave the seat after some time when you feel ready.

Breath is the main subject which connects us with the innermost being within us. Also, properly regulated breathing habit is the key of health. So, all meditation techniques have deep relation with breath. And the above technique of meditation directly helps one to draw all great benefits out of it.

At last I would like to talk about mysterious and unbelievable effects of meditation. I am bound to talk about it because this has got more than enough popularity today. It is possible to develop miraculous powers and super-normal abilities through meditation as meditation helps you to bridge your individual consciousness with the universal consciousness. But, this is very rare and requires unspeakable devotion and continuity in meditation, just like physical exercises help you to develop your muscles but making it comparable to WWE players require day and night labor.

But, as few minutes of physical exercise is enough to maintain health similarly at least minimum of ten minutes of meditation twice or thrice a day is enough to maintain inner peace. And there is no upper limit. Meditation has no side effect and its benefits are fathomless. More you meditate more you gain.

  1. I agree with the dictionary meaning of the word meditation that meditation involves deep and profound thinking. Before one is set out to meditate, he must know on what he must meditate. He must imbibe a thorough knowledge of the subject. Next he must know when and how to meditate. The person must select a calm and serene environment. He must concentrate on the subject and let the thought flow.

I believe meditation can create in the person a greater degree of conscious awareness. You will begin to see things mentally never seen before. The person's perspective would become clearer and he would emerge a new person thereafter.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You should have published this as a blog on ST. I am sure there you would get a wider readership.

    1. True meditation results in an extremely relaxed state of mind and body, bringing them under direct control of the soul. If meditation is continuous thinking, how can continuous exercise of mind help it to relax?
The expanded awareness in the meditative state is the result of the same relaxation and not of turbulence of thoughts. Isn't it?
Thanks for your kind suggestion for publishing this blog on ST (Speaking Tree). It will soon be published there too.

  2. WHAT ABOUT THOUGHT CONTROL ??? IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR ORDINARY "SADHAK" LIKE ME TO GET CONTROL OVER THOUGHTS . SOME TIMES , AFTER MEDITATION INSTEAD OF INNER PEACE , I FEEL VERY MUCH HIGH LEVEL IRRITATION AND TIREDNESS , WHY THIS IS SO ??? I KNOW VERY WELL, I SHOULD NOT GET INVOLVED WITH THOUGHTS ARISING WHILE MEDITATION. BUT AT ONE WEAK POINT OF TIME, IT HAPPENS AND WHOLE TIME SPENT FOR MEDITATION , CREATES TIREDNESS AND MENTAL DISTURBANCE .

    1. Anil ji, the situation you are facing is a very common one. Everyone has to tackle it in the primary stages. Please don't be disheartened and continue with practice. Thoughts are really very powerful and they get this energy from us alone. Please remove the feeling of guilt and failure that is creating chaos in your mind and gently direct your mind in the required direction, as getting carried away by thoughts in starting is very usual during meditation. With continued practice your concentration will increase and the problem will be solved. Try to sit for longer periods. Please do discuss any problem you encounter. I hope this will be helpful.
